FACILITIES AT SAUSAGE TREE SAFARI CAMP
GAME DRIVES
Experience 360-degree panoramic views from our open vehicles while in search of a variety of wildlife… negotiating valleys, hills and plains which provide some of the most spectacular views in the whole of the Lowveld
Each morning and late afternoon, an experienced, professional guide and tracker will take you on a safari game drive through thick bush and along open plains in search of the Big Five (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard) as well as a myriad of birds and game species such as giraffe, zebra, warthog, kudu and impala.
Sundowners will be served with tasty snacks watching the sun set over the African bush. During the drives there is a lot of emphasis on giving information on everything that is encountered – whether your interest is birding, insects, plants or trees, your guide will happily share his knowledge with you. Our guides also focus on some of the less noticeable aspects of the bush.
Driving along the Olifants River you will often encounter hippo and crocodile, and a variety of birdlife including the occasional, very special sighting of the much sought after Pels Fishing Owl.
SAUSAGE TREE'S UNIQUE SOUND SAFARIS
Have you ever wondered....
- If hippos talk under water?
- If ants talk at all?
- Why elephant shrews tap dance?
- Why birds sing at dawn?
Join us on a exciting Sound Safari with wildlife sound expert Derek Solomon to find the answers.
Using specialised sound equipment, we eavesdrop on the wild and hear what mammals, birds, insects and other animals have to say.
The safari starts after lunch with a fascinating talk on the world of sound: including how and why the big cats roar, birds sing and insects chatter. Moving onto infrasonic elephant rumbles and underwater conversations by hippo, fish and others; as well as non-vocal sounds by mammals and birds, and we wrap up with hints and tips on sound recording with basic equipment including smartphones.
We then head off on the afternoon game drive to listen to nature’s orchestra amplified through individual headphones. As night falls, we tune in to the nocturnal soundscape before returning to camp.
An early start the next morning gets us out on a drive to catch the dawn chorus. We stop regularly to listen in to a host of other sounds before heading back to camp for breakfast.
The two night stay includes time at one of the dams with the hippos and allows us to expand our game drive activities to cover more ground and listen in to more wildlife.
